The provision of showers for those sleeping rough in Cambridge is a fundamental part of of our welfare provision as the city’s only homeless day service. A hot shower each morning helps people to maintain self-respect, good health and dignity. Sadly, over time, these high-traffic areas had become very tired and damp-damaged.
By December 2021 we had reached a point of desperation trying to find a contractor willing to even provide a quote for the project. And then, a small miracle occurred! We received a telephone call from Mace who told us they’d just opened a local office in Cambridge and wanted to know if they could do anything to help. We could never have expected that this conversation would result in the amazing offer of the total refurbishment of the showers and our basement – at no cost to us!
Mace brought together many of their trade partners to take on the task and over recent months, they have achieved a complete transformation – leaving us wonderful facilities for our services users to enjoy.
Our very grateful thanks to all of the following trade partners who played a part in this project – always with a smile on their faces and endless patience: Clipfine Ltd, Ancorite Surface Protection, Premier Modular, STORTFORD INTERIORS (UK) LIMITED, Houston Cox Central Ltd, PHOENIX ELECTRICAL CO (UK) LTD., FES and BSW Contractors.
We were delighted that so many of our homeless sector partners, supporters and service users were able to be with us to mark the occasion of the official opening of the showers.
We were especially thankful to be joined by Cambridge Mayor Cllr Mark Ashton, his lovely wife Barbara and Deputy Mayor Jenny Gawthorpe.
It is so heartening to know that there is such goodwill and community spirit in our lovely city and we are very grateful to know that Mace intend to continue the relationship we have established over the past year.
